My parents were planning a small-scale toilet renovation in the spring; just painting the walls, a new sink and above the sink new tiles. My dad asked for help to select the new tiles. I suggested to him that instead of the new tiles there could be a mosaic work above the sink.
Mosaiikkityön materiaalina käytin 10 x 10 cm:n kokoisia, yksivärisiä keraamisia laattoja. Työvälineinä minulla oli lasiveitsi, halkaisupihdit, mosaiikkipihdit, pinsetit ja PVA-liimaa.
As a material for the work I used 10 x 10 cm ceramic tiles and the tools I used were a wheeled cutter, a double-geared nippers, handheld breaker, tweezers and PVA-adhesive.
Oikeinpäin lasikuituverkolle tehtävä mosaiikkityö mahdollistaa työn valmistamisen omalla työhuoneella. Verkolle PVA-liimalla liimattu työ voidaan kuljettaa jäykän alustan päällä kiinnitettäväksi muualle, sille varattuun paikkaan.
This method, direct on the fiberglass mesh, enables the making of the mosaic work at the workshop and then install elsewhere.
Pyysin isääni lähettämään kuvia WC:n tapetista, joka jäisi kahdelle seinälle. Kaksi seinää, joille myös mosaiikki asennettaisiin, maalattaisiin valkoisiksi. Tein luonnoksia vanhemmilleni hyväksyttäväksi tapetin muotomaailman pohjalta ja valitsimme yhdessä työssä käytettävän värimaailman.
I asked my dad to send me photos of the toilet the wallpaper, that would remain on the two walls of the toilet. The two walls, on which the mosaic would be installed, would be painted white. I made sketches to my parents to select the best one on the basis of the wallpaper and together we chose the color scheme used in the work.

| Työn aloitus. Työpöydällä on kolme kerrosta; alimmaisena on työn luonnos, jonka päälle on ensin asetettu läpinäkyvä muovi ja viimeiseksi lasikuituverkon palanen. Nämä kaikki kolme kerrosta kiinnitetään toisiinsa esim. nuppineuloilla, jotta ne eivät pääse liikkumaan työskentelyn aikana. Muotoillut laatanpalat kiinnitetään lasikuituverkkoon äärimmäisen pienellä liimamäärällä, jotta myös varsinaiselle kiinnitysaineelle (=jolla työ kiinnitetään seinään) jäisi tarpeeksi tarttuma-alaa. Muovi luonnoksen ja verkon välissä estää liiman tarttumisen luonnokseen. The start of the work. On the desktop there are three layers; at the bottom is the draft, on which is placed a transparent plastic and the uppermost is the glassfiber mesh. These three layers are put together with pins, so that the layers won't move while you work. The shaped tile pieces are glued with an extremely small amount of glue on the mesh, so that the actual adhesive, with what the work will be attached to the wall, would have enough gripping area. The plastic between the draft and the mesh will prevent the glue attach to the draft. |
